I am not a fan of the traditional Christmas festivities and would like to escape the cold and go somewhere they either celebrate in a different way or not at all.
I don’t have a lot of money so please don’t suggest I go to Thailand or somewhere far flung.
I am not a fan either and have spent many years trying to find a way to pass the holiday without eating a single mince pie. I once enjoyed Christmas in Mexico where I narrowly escaped being gored by a bull as I was foolishly wearing a red t-shirt. The weather was lovely, there was lots of fresh seafood to enjoy and it was a good solution. However, it wasn’t cheap so I appreciate that this is not an option.
Another year I went to Istanbul, where the weather was mild but rainy and there was no hint of Christmas. I spent the 25th December in a hammam being brought to life with a vigorous massage, then ate delicious grilled fish bought from a floating stall on the Bosphorous.
Going away for Christmas is generally more expensive, as it’s high season, but Gran Canaria is still a reasonable option. Flights with easyjet(www.easyjet.com) are presently around £310 return and the weather there is delightful with temperatures of 24 degrees. You will find celebrations across the island but should be able to steer well clear of huge Christmas dinners and stick to fresh fruit, fresh fish and healthy salads instead. You will return in good shape for the New Year without that heavy Christmas feeling.
The beach of Las Canteras in Las Palmas is famous for its Christmas-themed sand sculptures as an alternative to the typical fir tree. Or you can check into a lovely hotel with tropical plants and flowers instead.
The Hotel Cordial Mogan Playa by the pretty marina of Puerto de Mogan is a marvellous spot with lush botanical gardens, laden with subtropical plants. It has two heated pools and is designed like a typical Canarian village.
This tranquil retreat offers invigorating spa treatments as a change from wandering in the gardens. Prices for two people over Christmas are from £125 per room per night on a B & B basis.

Even just a few days away is a wonderful opportunity to flee what can be a very dreary time. Forget buying Christmas presents and just treat yourself to a few days in the sun.
